“Second chances are not given to make things right. But are given to prove that we can be better even after we fall.” – unknown
Lexx is one-third of the entrepreneurial trio who owns luxury streetwear brand SPHMR. After a failed attempt by her partners at launching a clothing brand, Lexx, Lamar and Miri have learned some new lessons and are making new strides in the urban outfitting game. I caught up with Lexx about how she and the guys are taking advantage of their second chance.
Where did the idea for SPHMR come from?
My team: Lamar, Miri, and I were just trying to come up with a name that was cool but also represents us as a brand. This is Lamar and Miri’s second go around in creating a clothing brand. When you think of sophomore, you think of second chance and that’s what this is for us. So, when Miri suggested the spelling “SPHMR” that was it, that stuck and our brand has been growing ever since.
Tell me about your fashion background.
I’ve always had a love for fashion. Much of my experience as a visual merchandiser and stylist allows me to create looks and delve into a variety of elements. I never thought I would be a part of a fashion brand because I went to college for business marketing and I didn’t know how to draw. My original plan was just to be a stylist. So when I came aboard, I decided to invest in myself and I bought an iPad Pro, the Apple Pencil, and downloaded this design app. Little did I know, I could draw just enough to get my designs across and it wasn’t as bad as I thought. It’s funny, the ideas you can create when you put your mind to something.
What kind of clothing/pieces do you sell and why?
We sell luxury streetwear because that is what represents us and its most versatile. Our brand is all about comfort. I’m the type of person who doesn’t like my clothes to be so fitted. That’s what I’m bringing to the women’s line: cute and comfortable clothes you can wear with heels or sneakers. Ladies know that you can still be cute and chill.
Who is your clothing meant for?
We have something for everyone. Whether it’s a t-shirt, hoodie, or a sweatshirt. When we come up with designs, we want it to appeal to everybody. We have our customers post pictures and tag us to show off their #SPHMRstyle and how they rock it. We love having their support. Our brand is for whoever sees this interview. We welcome everyone to the SPHMRclass.
What do you think sets SPHMR apart from all of the other urban apparel lines that are out there?
I think what sets us apart is the overall brand and name “SPHMR”, because its more than just a cool name. It has a meaning: Second Chances. We’ve all been there, where something didn’t go right the first time and you have to start over and try again. Especially in a time like this, we could all use a second chance at something.
What’s one thing you know now that you didn’t know before that you would tell the aspiring entrepreneur looking to get into fashion?
Don’t focus on what you can’t do, focus how you can make it happen.
We all go into our line of work to be successful, but a nice bonus is the ability to inspire others. How important is that to you?
Yes, it’s very important to me. I want to be able to show other people with the same motivation that you can start your own business. All it takes it a little research and just enough belief in yourself to go after your passion.
Name three fashionistas or designers, past or present, that you draw inspiration from?
I always admired June Ambrose, Rihanna (of course lol), and for the last one, I would say myself. I am my own inspiration because I like to dress how I’m feeling that day, and I believe June and Rihanna do the same.
What do consumers have to look forward to as far as growth from SPHMR?
We will continue to release new items for men and women. We really want to bring in more women customers and expand our brand to a kid’s line. We don’t want to focus on just men, as our vision is to become a lifestyle and family brand.
Provide 3 tips to fashionistas looking to create an authentic line of apparel?
-Be true to who you are.
-Do your research.
-Invest in yourself, because if you don’t who will.
How can people find you and SPHMR on the internet, social media, etc.?
