Robin Thicke is either really smart or really stupid. The singer released the video for the first single “Get Her Back” from his new album “Paula” which details the destruction of his marriage and his efforts to get his wife, Paul Patton, back after being unfaithful.
The first visual from the album shows Robin in dire straights pleading via text message for “P” to take him back. The crooner even tells her “I wrote a whole album about you” to which “P” responds “I don’t care”. My question is should she? Heck, should we? My first thought is that Robin’s efforts to get Paula back should include some clear communication, marriage counseling and a bit of begging IN PRIVATE. Not an album for the world to hear that could prove to further embarrass her. But then I remember Marvin Gaye’s “Here, My Dear” about his first marriage to Anna Gordy Gaye and Usher’s “Confessions” which was rumored to be about his failing relationship with Chili of TLC. Most of Mary J. Blige’s music to date is about her personal life and relationships, good and bad. Most of the best R&B music is about love and pain…break-ups and make-ups. When I remember that, I get excited for next Tuesday, the day when “Paula” will be released and Robin Thicke gives us some begging and pleading in the form of good ole fashioned R&B.
Could this all be for publicity? Sure, but could the music be worth it? Definitely. If Robin is sincerely ready to do it right this time, I hope it works.
