It looks like Ray Rice won this round. The running back was suspended for two games in July after he assaulted his then girlfriend, Janay Rice, in Spring of this year. However, after footage of the assault leaked in September, the NFL suspended him indefinitely. The NFL Player’s Association appealed the second punishment on behalf of Rice, citing double jeopardy. The NFL countered the appeal stating that the video footage was new evidence.
After hearing testimony from both Ray and Janay Rice earlier this month, the arbitrator’s decision to reinstate Ray Rice was announced this afternoon reactivating him immediately. He is now eligible to play for any NFL team. I don’t argue that Rice’s being punished twice for the same indiscretion was indeed double jeopardy, but the truth of the matter is the second punishment should have been the first and only punishment…indefinite suspension. Although I believe that others share my feelings on the matter, not everyone does. There is probably a team or two that will show interest in the 27 year old running back. The question is who. Any guesses on where he will end up?
In the meantime the spotlight is once again on NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, as Rice’s reinstatement is a reminder that Goodell played this situation entirely wrong.
