Nicki Minaj has been the major power player for the last few years when it comes to female MCs in hip hop. Her most recent move definitely shows that she is trying to further solidify her place in hip hip history. Beyonce doesn’t team up with just anybody so her choice to include Nicki on the remix to her hit girl anthem “Flawless” speaks volumes. Nicki shared how the collab came to fruition with Miss Info.
A month or two ago, Jay called me while I was on my way to Vegas and he said “Beyonce wants you to remix flawless” and after I got proper medical help and started breathing again, I said “Well…” She sent me a version and told me, ‘I want you to be you, I don’t want you to hold back, I just want you to be you and do you.” I recorded the verse in New York and she stopped by the studio and was such a sweetheart. She was hyping me up, saying “do you thing! Go in!” I’ve been just waiting for her to drop it. She told me that she would drop it while she was on tour, I wrote the verse before she went on tour. I’ve been sending her pictures of myself and we’ve gone back and forth about the single art and now you have it.

Speaking of female MCs, it looks like the female MC category is heating up and Nicki may be forced to share the spotlight. With the emergence of Iggy Azalea and Azealia Banks in the last year or two came a bit more competition than Nicki was used to. Now another hip hop heavy weight has resurfaced. Remy Ma who has been in prison for the last six years has been released. And she is serious about her return to hip hip, recording the remix to “They Don’t Love You No More” with DJ Khaled the same night she became a free woman. Check out the track below.
I’m one who’s in favor of unity instead of competition but it will definitely be interesting to see how the battle of the female MC unfolds. Are you feeling these remixes?
