An all out manhunt is underway for a white male who entered the historic and predominantly black Emanuel AME Church in Charleston, South Carolina and killed 9 people last night. According to reports, the man actually attended the bible study that was taking place for almost an hour before opening fire on the other attendees.
“This is an all-hands-on deck effort with the community and law enforcement,” Charleston Police Chief Gregory Mullen said. The Charleston police department have released the following information relating to shooter and his vehicle in hopes that it will lead them to killer. The suspect is believed to be 21-25 years old and is described as approximately 5-foot-9, wearing a sweatshirt with distinctive markings and Timberland boots.
Police also said the car he was driving had a “very distinctive” license plate.
“We believe this is a hate crime; that is how we are investigating it,” Mullen said. The FBI and state law enforcement have joined the search and the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division, the FBI and the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of South Carolina are opening a hate crime investigation into the shooting. The investigation is parallel to and cooperative with the state’s investigation.
