Summer is quickly approaching and with it comes festivals, weddings, barbecues and a host of other events meant to celebrate memorable occasions and bring us closer together. Imagine catching up with family and friends over laughter and a few drinks with the breeze on your skin as the sun begins to set. Amazing scene huh? lol Well that scene is one of the reasons Torrie Mitchell created Pour It Up! Beverage Consulting & Event Services. Torrie told us all about the bartending business, what it takes to be successful, how they creative drinks for clients and the most important lesson she’s learned since getting into the business. Check out the interview below.
Chattertainment: So tell me about Pour It Up! Beverage Consulting & Event Services. What made you get into beverage services?
Torrie Mitchell: I started bartending in 2011 for extra cash and really enjoyed the business. I decided to do something on my own and created Pour It Up!
Pour It Up, Beverage Consulting & Events Services specializes in beverage consulting and private bartending. What’s unique about our company is that we first consult with all our clients and educate them on beverage serving and determine if we can accommodate their request. We take in account the amount of liquor needed based on consumption limit, number of guest and event type and discuss customizations that can make the client’s event different from the norm. With the information provided we develop a summary for each client that includes services to be provided, estimated cost of service, estimated cost of supplies, estimated cost of liquor needed along with a guide for host when planning parties that will include alcohol.
C: Do you create your own signature drinks specific that people can only find at Pour It Up?
TM: We have creative minds, but we assist our clients with coming up with their own concoctions specific to their event. We want all our events to be unique and in doing so we provide our clients with the tools to customize their drinks, menus and specialty bars.
C: What type of events do you provide beverage services for?
TM: No event it out of our range. We provide services for weddings, birthday parties, company events, barbeques and more! We even do children’s event where we make non-alcoholic drinks for kids to enjoy.
C: What is the largest event you have ever serviced?
TM: Having started our company just this spring, our HNG (Highest # of guest served) is around 50 persons. We are not too big on getting numbers, just serving our guest exceptionally!
C: Are there specific things that come with being from and servicing the DMV area? Like specific drinks or other service related aspects?
TM: The DMV area is very well populated with people who like to have a good time. The people in this area are willing to pay a fair amount for great service but they choose who they conduct business with mostly from referrals. For a startup business much like Pour It Up!, it can be difficult to begin rounding up cliental. It’s a “who you know” kind of business and great exposure is needed to survive!
C: What has been the most interesting client experience you’ve had?
TM: All of our clients have been unique in one way or another. No one client has been the same and we love that! It puts up a challenge for our company each and every time we consult to provide our services!
C: If you could service the event of any celebrity or brand, who or what would it be?
TM: We are high achievers at Pour It Up! and so we would go for the gold. The Diageo Company is the world’s leading premium drinks business with a huge collection of beverage alcohol brands from Ciroc to Hennessey to Tanqueray. Serving an event for just one of their brands would be huge and open doors for more exposure and partnerships!
C: Have you ever had a bad client experience like someone becoming too intoxicated?
TM: There are guests that usually go beyond their consumption limit at an event and this is one of the things we educate our clients/hosts on at the first consultation. It is very important to understand the nature of beverage serving and knowing the appropriate actions to take when a guest is intoxicated. The host is ultimately responsible so we work with them to handle these cases. We reserve the right to stop serving guests when they are past their limit and make sure that our clients/host are on the same page!
C:What’s the most valuable lesson you’ve learned since starting your business?
TM: The most important lesson I’ve learned is to have boundaries! This will help establish baselines and credibility for a business. When there are too many options given or provided, the focus of the event gets lost. Guests are then unable to recall that memorable moment of the event. Was it the customized menu, the smoothies, Jell-O shots, Poptails, or Whisky bar that was super awesome? Offering too much at one event can be a downfall.
C: Tell people how they can find you, website, social media, etc.
TM: Our website is up and can be accessed at www.aglassabovetherest.com. We are on Instagram and Twitter @AGlassAbove. We also can be contacted by email at firstname.lastname@example.org! We dare you to contact us to see what we can offer! No one has to commit to hiring us at the first consultation! We will impress you and hope that you spread the word!
