After debuting as FOX’s highest rated show in three years, the network has picked up Empire for a second season. The musical drama that centers around the entertainment company, Empire Enterprises, has been warmly received by viewers and critics alike. However, for as much positive feedback the series has received, there are also some folks who aren’t pleased with some of the show’s content. Specifically, a scene in last week’s episode where Cookie walked in on her gay son and his love interest while in bed. The complaints come from people who feel that the scene was unnecessary and “inappropriate” for network television and that “gayness” is being pushed down the throats of Americans.
Here’s the thing…As black people we complain when we see shows that don’t include representation of us. We use the argument that the world is not only white so neither should the cast of an entire television show. Well the same argument can be made in this instance. Aren’t there gay people in the world? Why is it considered “inappropriate” for those people to be represented on the small screen? Are we saying that romance is okay on television as long as it’s heterosexual romance? We can’t pick and choose what groups of people we should and should not, can or can not discriminate against. Any form of discrimination is wrong.
What I enjoy most about Empire is that it explores issues that no one wants to talk about or even acknowledge. I hope that the writers remain bold and brave in the story lines and not let the naysayers make them shy away from real issues that A LOT of us face in 2015.
