Activist Cornel West was among the 49 people arrested during yesterday’s protests in Ferguson, Missouri in honor of “Ferguson October”, a culmination of activism and protests in response to the killing of Mike Brown back in August.
West and others were arrested for disturbing the peace and trying to push through a police line while demanding the arrest of Darren Wilson, the officer who shot and killed Michael Brown. According to
reports, he made it very clear that he had no problem going to jail for the cause.
“It’s a beautiful thing to see people on fire for justice, but I didn’t come here to give a speech,” he said. “I came here to go to jail.”
Before this week, protests had mostly died down in St. Louis, but regained steam after the death of 18 year old Vonderrit Deondre Myers last week. Authorities said the teenager was armed and fired at the officer who ultimately killed him, but the teenager’s relatives said they don’t believe the polices’ account.
