Rushing prematurely into holy matrimony can definitely end in disaster, but would you call getting married after a 10 year relationship premature? Singer Miguel chatted it up on Ebro In The Morning recently about why he and his girlfriend of 10 years, model Nazanin Mandi, are not yet engaged. He shared his opinion on people getting hitched before they’re ready and him not being that kind of person.
I think it’s more about working. The thing is you got to know who you are as a person first of all. I think I’ve come so far as a man and I’m just starting to feel solid where I can be like “You know what, I think I can hold this down legitimately”. I think now people throw things around like marriage. I just wasn’t raised like that.
I don’t feel the pressure because I know that when I commit, I really commit. Now it’s just thrown around because it’s so easy to break up. And I’m just not that kind of person. I’m just not gonna do that. I wouldn’t do that to her and that’s just not how I was raised. I just feel like that would be honorable.
I understand not wanting to commit before you’re ready and taking marriage seriously, but time should be taken seriously also. If you feel like the person you’re with is “the one” (which Miquel has said he feels Nazanin is) and you’ve built a healthy foundation in your relationship, why wait 10 years? I think there is a time when a person knows whether or not they want to spend their life with you, but some people drag their feet on actually getting married for various reasons. It could be timing, finances or plain selfishness and wanting to keep sowing their oats. Being engaged at least shows some sign of intent but no one wants to be engaged forever either. How long is too long for someone to wait for their mate to be “ready”?
