Unless you’ve been under a rock for the last 24 hours, I’m sure you’ve heard about the physical altercation involving Beyonce’s husband Jay Z and sister Solange in an elevator the night of the MET Gala earlier this month. You’ve probably watched the video as well so this post is not about what happened. This post is about the aftermath. I know that with celebrity and fame comes scrutiny and lack of privacy and those who seek it should prepare for what comes with it, but how do you prepare for your ENTIRE LIFE to become public property? Beyonce and Jay Z have never claimed to be perfect or to have perfect lives. In fact, as private as they are, their music pretty much confirms that they have problems like any other married couple or family. Does the fact that they are incredibly successful and famous make them any less human?
The response to the video of the altercation has included accusations of abuse of Beyonce by Jay Z, Solange being drunk or on drugs and Beyonce being a robot with no mind of her own, none of which can be determined by watching the video which doesn’t even have audio. The memes about the incident that are meant to be funny do nothing but show people’s ignorance and lack of sensitivity. Most of the people making jokes would have no idea how to deal with their private lives being fair game to the entire world. Beyonce and Jay Z are probably mortified right now and the fact that some folks are relishing in that is disgusting. What they do for a living is entertainment but when they are not on stage they are people just like us and they deserve the ability to deal with their issues privately. What would people see if you were caught on camera inside an elevator with a loved one or friend? And how would you feel if the world were privy to those moments?
